Want Better Health? There’s an App for That

How your smartphone can improve your health.

You’ve got apps for social media, transportation, ordering groceries, playing games, and listening to music, but do you have any apps designed to improve your health? If not, you’re missing out on a valuable way to stay on track with your diet, be more active, manage your medications, get enough sleep, and more.

Don’t know which apps will do your body good? Start with these.

Brain Health

Keep your brain healthy and your memory sharp with Luminosity: Brain Training. This free app comes with more than 40 simple games that challenge your memory, attention, problem-solving, speed, and flexibility. As you play, the app tests your strengths and weaknesses so you see what you need to work on to keep your mind sharp as a tack!

Sleep

Good health revolves around good sleep. Getting a solid seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night keep your body systems functioning their best. With the Sleep Cycle: Smart Alarm Clock app, you can track your sleep patterns. One of the best features of this app is its smart alarm clock. Instead of waking you with a harsh beep at a specified time, the alarm wakes you gently during a light sleep cycle. Because it is monitoring your sleep, the app knows when you’re sleeping lightly and wakes you during this time, as early as 90 minutes before your alarm would normally go off. You may think waking up earlier is a bad thing, but waking when your body is ready is a gift! With this alarm, there’s no more waking up feeling groggy and disoriented. Instead, you wake refreshed and energized. All you have to do is turn on the app and set your phone on your night stand.

Hydration

Since 60 percent of your body is made of water, it makes sense that you need to drink plenty of the zero-calorie liquid to maintain good health. Now, you can reach your H20 goal with an app. Drink more water and less soda, sweet tea, and lemonade with the app Waterlogged. This free app helps you track how much water you consume each day. Record your intake with metric numbers or pictures. You can also track your progress and set reminders, ensuring you get plenty of water each day.

Diet and Exercise

Download the MyFitnessPal app to help you reach a variety of health and weight loss goals. With this single app, you can track your food, calorie count, and nutrients with the app’s database of more than 6 million foods. You can use a barcode scanner for food and even log menu items from popular restaurants. Make full use of the app by logging your exercise, tracking your progress, and getting accountability from the app community. Set your own goals or let the app suggest goals for you.

Health Questions

Have a question about your health symptoms? Not sure if you should see a doctor? Use the free HealthTap app to find answers. The health database contains more than 2.5 million answers from doctors on hundreds of health conditions. Get a specific question answered by a doctor within 24 hours. Need to see a doctor or get a prescription? Pay for a virtual consultation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

First Aid

Anyone who’s unsure how to handle basic first aid or emergency medical situations should download the First Aid: American Red Cross app. With expert advice and step-by-step instructions, animations, and videos to assist you in first aid, this free app could save a life. At the least, it could save some stress. Content is preloaded so the information is available even if you don’t have an Internet connection.

Choices

A healthy lifestyle is about making healthy choices, and grocery shopping involves lots of choices. Make smart food choices when shopping with the ShopWell:Better Food Choices app. Enter your diet goals, health concerns, allergies, and food dislikes. Then go shopping. While at the store, scan the foods you normally purchase and let the app help you decide if they are healthy options. You may also discover foods you’ve never tried that fit your health profile.
