Got Symptoms? Pay Attention!

Don’t ignore these symptoms, as they may indicate a more serious underlying health condition.

Are you the type of person who hates going to the doctor? If so, you probably put off doctor visits as long as you can. As a result, you’re behind on your screening tests and you excuse your symptoms on aging.

Unfortunately, this attitude can backfire in a big, bad way. Because while you may want to write off your symptoms as nothing serious, they may indicate an underlying health condition. The sooner you’re diagnosed and start receiving treatment, the better your chances of healing and recovery.

No matter how old you are and how healthy you think you are, if you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see your doctor or head to the emergency room immediately.

#1: Chest Pain

Pressure, tightness, squeezing, pain, or heaviness in your chest should never be ignored. Your life could be at risk, as chest pain is the tell tale sign of a heart attack. Other symptoms you may not recognize include pain that extends down your arm, sweating, nausea, or trouble breathing. Of course, chest pain can be a symptom of gastrointestinal reflux or a panic attack, but it’s better to be examined by a doctor for chest pain just in case.

#2: A Sudden, Horrible Headache

Pain in your head that comes on quickly and becomes worse than any you’ve experienced requires immediate medical attention. Such a headache may indicate a ruptured aneurysm, which is a popped blood vessel in your brain. Other possible causes may include meningitis, cardiac cephalgia, temporal arteritis, or shingles.

#3: Fever

A fever is usually a sign your body is fighting an infection like a cold or flu. When an adult has a fever that lasts longer than three days or is 103 degrees or greater, it’s time to see the doctor. High or prolonged fevers may indicate an underlying infection such as a urinary tract infection, sinus infection, tuberculosis, endocarditis, meningitis, or even cancer.

#4: Unexplained Weight Loss

You may be glad to see the scale go down, but if you’re not taking measures to lose weight, dropping pounds may not be a good sign. If you lose five percent or more of your body weight over the past six months without trying, make an appointment to see your doctor. This kind of weight loss is often a sign of cancer. Other health conditions that cause unexplained weight loss include hyperthyroidism, liver disease, diabetes, depression, or malabsorption disorders.

#5: Shortness of Breath

Feeling like you can’t get a deep breath, breathing faster than normal, wheezing, or gasping for air are all reasons for concern. Sudden shortness of breath may be caused by a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot gets stuck in the lung’s blood vessels. Other underlying causes of shortness of breath include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure, an irregular heart rhythm, asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, or anxiety.

#6: Seeing Flashes of Light

Seek immediate medical attention if you see flashes of light or bright spots in your vision. While these symptoms may indicate the beginning of a migraine headache, they can also mean you have a detached retina. Without immediate care, you may lose your vision.

#7: Confusion or a Personality Change

Sudden confusion is always cause for alarm. If you suddenly can’t think straight, can’t focus, have a change in your normal personality, or become aggressive, call 911 immediately. It may be the result of poor nutrition, dehydration, medication side effects, infection, or a mental health condition. However, it can also be a symptom of a more serious condition such as a stroke, bleeding in the brain, or a brain tumor.
